Explosion at U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works Plant Leaves Two Dead and Over a Dozen Injured
In a shocking incident, an explosion occurred at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works plant in Clairton, Pennsylvania, on August 11, 2025. The explosion, which took place at two of the coke oven batteries, has left two people dead and over a dozen injured.
The incident, which involved multiple explosions, occurred in the reversing room between batteries 13 and 15, part of the coal coking process. Clairton Mayor Rich Lattanzi reported multiple injuries due to the explosion, and at least 10 people were transported to hospitals for treatment of injuries. Five of the hospitalized individuals are in critical but stable condition.
Search-and-rescue efforts remain active at the plant, with Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman stating that there was an active search and rescue underway with dozens injured. Union officials, including United Steelworkers District 10 Director Bernie Hall, are on the ground assessing the situation and helping members.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro offered assistance to local officials following the explosion. The cause of the explosion has not been formally determined yet, and the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause and identify preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
The Clairton Coke Works plant, located along the Monongahela River, about 15 miles south of Pittsburgh, employs thousands of workers. Multiple individuals were injured and treated on the scene, though an exact number has not been provided. Only one person remains unaccounted for after the explosion.
The fire at the plant started around 10:50 a.m., and the subsequent loud noises were initially thought to be explosions but were later identified as the activation of relief pressure valves by U.S. Steel officials. Despite ongoing investigations, no official cause has been announced as of now.
