Vietnam's Long Thanh Airport Set for 2024 Opening, Boosting International Flights
Vietnam's aviation sector is set for a major boost with the upcoming completion of the first phase of Long Thanh International Airport. The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has chosen the Incheon Airport Consortium to provide consulting services for the project, which is expected to handle 80% of international flights to the Ho Chi Minh City area.
Long Thanh International Airport, Vietnam's largest aviation infrastructure project to date with a total investment of VND336.63 trillion ($12.76 billion), is being developed in three phases. The first phase, nearing completion, includes one runway and a passenger terminal, set to open next year with a capacity to serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually.
The airport will handle all international flights of 1,000 km or more, while airlines will choose operations for shorter international flights. Tan Son Nhat Airport will manage the remaining 20% of international flights and 90% of domestic flights to the area. It will cover all international flights under 1,000 km and serve markets between HCMC and nearby countries like Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, accounting for 15% to 17% of total international traffic.
The Incheon Airport Consortium, led by Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) and Vietnam’s PMI Consulting Services JSC, has been selected to provide management consultancy services for the airport. The state will allocate the share of international and domestic flights at each airport over time, with the criteria to be reviewed after the first five years of operation.
Upon full operational capacity by 2050, Long Thanh International Airport is expected to handle 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo per year. It is projected to account for 10% to 12% of traffic on the Hanoi/Danang-HCMC trunk routes operated by domestic carriers, significantly easing the burden on Tan Son Nhat Airport and boosting Vietnam's aviation industry.
