Volkswagen's hidden guideline unveiled!
Volkswagen Announces Major Production Cuts and Plant Closures
Volkswagen is undergoing a significant restructuring, with plans to close at least three factories and lay off tens of thousands of workers in Germany, China, and South Africa. This move is aimed at cutting costs and remaining competitive amidst weaker demand in China and Europe [1].
In Germany, the Dresden Transparent Factory will cease vehicle production by 2025, shifting its focus towards third-party manufacturing or circular economy activities [2]. The Zwickau plant, currently producing 170,000 units, is set to experience a decrease of approximately 57% of its technical capacity, with the potential annual production reduced to 230,000 units if the reduction is implemented [1]. Volkswagen is reportedly considering all options for the Osnabrück plant's future, where the production of the T-Roc Cabrio will continue until 2027 [1].
In China, Volkswagen's joint venture plant in Nanjing with SAIC will officially cease operations starting late 2025, reflecting struggles in the competitive Chinese EV market [3]. Meanwhile, in South Africa, the Kariega Plant temporarily suspended vehicle production from April to May 2025 for facility upgrades. This includes significant investments in robotics and new fixtures to support future production, including a new model project [5].
As part of this strategic overhaul, Volkswagen is shifting production lines and consolidating some assembly lines at Wolfsburg to focus on EV models like the ID.3. This forms part of a broader plan to save €15 billion annually by 2025, including €4 billion from production realignments, supporting the company's EV push while downsizing traditional production sites [2][4].
Workforce reductions are planned to be socially responsible, with a target of reducing around 35,000 jobs by 2030. The aim is to avoid outright massive plant closures where possible but reflect structural changes in production capacity and focus [2][4].
The Glass Manufactory in Dresden, with an unknown maximum capacity, is also included in the production capacity reduction plans, with a reduction of 8,000 units planned [1]. Volkswagen's Wolfsburg plant, with a maximum capacity of 800,000 units, is set to reduce its production capacities by 500,000 units [1]. The future of the Osnabrück plant after 2027 remains uncertain [1].
In 2024, only 523,000 cars were produced at the Wolfsburg plant [1]. In recent years, the Osnabrück plant has only produced 35,000 units [1]. The current production at the Zwickau plant is not specified in the article [1].
