Voting on the development plan for Duke Street in Alexandria concludes today

The city of Alexandria has initiated a community planning process for the Duke University Corridor land use plan, a move aimed at shaping the future development of this vital area up to Alexandria Union Station.

The extended public poll on the Duke University Land Use Plan ends today, marking the beginning of an engaging process that invites the community to voice their opinions and ideas. Launched in June, the poll is available in English, Amharic, and Spanish, with translation and interpretation services provided throughout to ensure accessibility for all participants.

The planning process will cover a wide range of topics, including land use, environment and climate, equity, mobility and connectivity, pedestrian safety and accessibility, parks and open space, and housing affordability. However, it's important to note that this process does not pertain to the WestEnd development or the Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark, as they are separate entities with their own development schedules.

Speaking of schedules, much of what the city is planning for Duke University will centre around the sprawling WestEnd development, opening next year. The Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark, on the other hand, is scheduled to open in 2028. The community planning process does not change the expected opening dates for these projects.

The community planning process is a part of the FY 2024-2025 Interdepartmental Long Range Planning Work Program, adopted by City Council. Once completed, the Duke University Land Use Plan will guide city officials in the development of the Duke University Corridor from the former Landmark Mall to Alexandria Union Station. The plan is expected to be ready for City Council consideration and adoption in late 2026/early 2027.

It's worth mentioning that the last comprehensive update for the land use concept of the Duke University Corridor was in 1992. Since then, the area has undergone significant changes, making this update all the more crucial.

The Duke University Land Use Plan, once implemented, is likely to influence the development of the Duke University Corridor, including areas near the WestEnd development and the Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark. The city encourages everyone to participate in this important process to help shape the future of their community.
