xAI Partners with Solaris to Rapidly Scale Energy for Colossus 2 Supercomputer
xAI, a leading AI company, has partnered with Solaris Energy Infrastructure to rapidly scale energy supply, aiming to support its ambitious projects. The collaboration has already resulted in a significant achievement: installing a cooling capacity of around 200 megawatts for xAI's upcoming AI supercomputer, Colossus 2, within just six months.
Colossus 2, projected to be the world's largest single AI cluster, is estimated to cost 'several tens of billions of dollars'. Construction began on March 7, 2025, in Memphis, Tennessee. However, xAI is facing challenges, including high turnover due to its 'hardcore' work culture and concerns about Elon Musk's influence on model behavior. Despite these hurdles, xAI is moving energy production to Mississippi to avoid resistance in Memphis and expects over 1.1 gigawatts of turbine capacity to be fully operational by Q2 2027.
xAI's aggressive expansion plans aim to surpass competitors like Meta and Anthropic in computing power as early as Q3 2025. Yet, OpenAI is predicted to remain ahead in total available computing power.
